Welland, ON –The Rouge Valley Lifesaving Club hosted its Waterfront Training Camp this pastSaturday & Sunday, May 23 – 24, at the PenFinancial Credit Union Flatwater Community Centre, inviting individuals to participate in drowning prevention workshops.
Rouge Valley Lifesaving Club is a community club in the York Region area that focuses on training youth in lifesaving sport. Lifesaving sport is a “humanitarian” sport, where skills acquired from training and competition can be used to save lives. The club focuses on “surf lifesaving” where it comprises of four key elements: open water swimming, beach running, paddle boarding, and surf skiing.
“One of our challenges is to find good venues to train in, especially when the Canadian waters are often cold throughout the year, including the summer,” stated Rouge Valley Lifesaving Club President, Adrian Wong. “The PenFinancial Credit Union Flatwater Community Centre is the perfect place for us to run our Surf Lifesaving Training Camp: flat water with a shallow depth that allows the water temperature to heat up quicker than the Great Lakes. This is the 2nd year that we have partnered up with the Welland Recreational Canal Corporation where we ran our training camp in May.”
Attracting 16 athletes, ranging from 9 years of age to 55 years of age, these full day workshops focused on three of the four disciplines of open water lifesaving skills: paddle boarding (similar to surf lifeguard skills), surf skiing (similar to K1’s of the Canoe Kayak community), and open water swimming.
“Overall it was a great success, as we were able to “jump-start” our training season in preparation for provincials (Toronto, ON) and nationals (Halifax, NS) in August and to re-engage our members in open water training after a long cold winter,” expressed Wong. “Thanks go to all the coaches and volunteers that made this event happen, and the Welland Recreational Canal Corporation for letting us use their facilities.”
The PenFinancial Credit Union Flatwater Community Centre looks forward to hosting the 2016 Lifesaving Waterfront Training Camp next spring.
