Welland Recreational Waterway Trail Receives National Trails Coalition Funding

WELLAND, ON – The Welland Recreational Canal Corporation (WRCC) is pleased to announce that it has been successful in attaining grant funding from the National Trails Coalition for the Welland Recreational Waterway Trail.   Through the National Trails Infrastructure Program, a key component of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the WRCC will receive $22,800 as part of the National grant program.

The Welland Recreational Waterway Trail is a 3 metre wide paved trail that spans 20 kilometres within the City of Welland. Located strategically in the southern Niagara Region, the trail is an integral piece of the Greater Niagara Circle Route; positioning Welland as a connecting link between St. Catharines to the North and Port Colborne to the South. This trail enjoys heavy seasonal use by local and visiting recreational users, exercisers, athletes, bird watchers, adventurers, and trekkers.

“Our unique natural heritage in Welland is a great asset and should be a source of pride for the community,” expressed Malcom Allen, Member of Parliament for Welland. “Funding from the National Trails Coalition for maintaining and enhancing our public trails will allow the Welland Recreational Canal Corporation to further its excellent work providing safe spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy our world class trail system. In advance of the influx of international visitors to Welland for the Pan Am games, this funding could not come at a better time.”

The funds will assist in purchasing and installing new signage in strategic locations along the trail to highlight key information for trail users, support additional maintenance and cleanup initiatives and provide conduits to spur future partnerships with the Greater Niagara Circle Route Committee, Active Transportation Groups in the Region, and to compliment bike friendly initiatives of the City of Welland.welland canal
